Associate of Arts Degree
Mount Tamalpais College’s Associate of Arts degree in General Studies at San Quentin State Prison is a rigorous multi-disciplinary education that offers introductory courses in the humanities, social sciences, math, and science. To earn the AA degree, students must complete 61 semester units (20 classes) across the range of subjects. Most courses are introductory and lower division, and are transferable to four-year institutions.
If you know someone who is currently incarcerated at San Quentin, or another California prison, and is interested in applying to Mount Tamalpais College, visit our Admissions page to find out more about the process.
In contrast to correspondence courses offered at most prisons, our courses are in-classroom and discussion-based, and offer transferable credits. Review our full course catalog—including course descriptions and student learning outcomes for credit and non-credit courses.
Many of Our Students Are the First in Their Family to Earn a Degree
When students have completed the requirements for the AA degree, they are eligible to graduate with an Associate of Arts in General Studies. Each June we host a commencement ceremony in the visiting room at San Quentin State Prison. Graduates receive their degree surrounded by family, friends, fellow students, Mt. Tam College staff and board members, and other supporters.
