Upcoming Event: Education and Community at San Quentin

By Mt. Tam College | January 13, 2023

Join us at the San Francisco Public Library’s Koret Auditorium on Saturday, February 11 from 11-12:30 as alumni of Mount Tamalpais College discuss the role of education and community in their lives during and post-incarceration. The panel discussion will follow a screening of The Other Side of the Wall, a short film by R.J. Lozada about the friendships forged in the classroom.

Ear Hustle Co-Host Earlonne Woods will moderate the panel, which will feature alumni and San Quentin community members Jesse Vasquez, Corey McNeil, Anthony Ammons, Johnny Lam, Wayne Boatright, and San Quentin’s longtime Public Information Officer Samuel Robinson. Panelists will have an opportunity to share their experiences and opinions on the challenges of higher education in prison and how education can lead to safer prison environments and healthy communities – demonstrating that the message of “education being the key” is not just a catchphrase but a reality.

This event is free and open to the public. Register here!

It's been a rough few weeks in terms of media layoffs so I want to flag a job I'm helping hire for: @prisonjourn, which trains incarcerated people as journalists and helps them get published, is hiring a managing editor to run all of its editorial strategy https://prisonjournalismproject.org/job-posting-managing-editor/

Teaching @StanfordLaw students alongside incarcerated students at @MtTamCollege in #SanQuentin was a highlight of the year—with hopefully more to come!

A fascinating glimpse at the history of higher education at San Quentin! While many hurdles still exist when running a college with a prison as its campus, at least we no longer have to "copy, stencil, and mimeograph" course materials to bring them inside.
